Altitude Dreamer: Conquering Boundaries

Carla’s lifelong connection with the mountains was ignited at the tender age of 4, when her father led her to the summit of a majestic 14,000-foot volcano near their home in Quito, Ecuador. The awe-inspiring experience left an indelible mark on her, kindling a profound passion for high places and setting the trajectory of her life’s journey.

As she entered her teenage years, Carla’s love for the mountains deepened, propelling her to the captivating peaks of the French Alps. It was here that she pursued her academic aspirations, immersing herself in the study of geology and eventually earning a master’s degree in geochemistry. However, when presented with a lucrative job offer from one of the world’s largest oil-field services companies, Carla made a bold choice to follow her heart and forge a career as a mountain guide.

Today, Carla stands as a certified member of the prestigious Ecuadorian Association of Mountain Guides, sharing her expertise and passion with fellow climbers. Alongside her esteemed teammate Adrian Ballinger at Alpenglow Expeditions, Carla is continuously honing her skills and striving towards earning her IFMGA certification, a testament to her unwavering dedication to her craft.

Carla’s mountaineering accomplishments have been nothing short of extraordinary, boasting awe-inspiring summits of three formidable 8000-meter peaks without the aid of supplemental oxygen. Her triumphs also extend to conquering the challenging south face of Aconcagua. Through these remarkable feats, Carla has emerged as a beacon of inspiration and a role model for women and girls not only in South America but across the globe.

Beyond her personal achievements, Carla’s exceptional leadership qualities shine brightly amidst the demanding and stressful environments of mountaineering expeditions. Her remarkable ability to foster peace and open communication among team members has earned her widespread respect and admiration. Back in her homeland of Ecuador, Carla directs a groundbreaking social project known as Mas Allá De Una Cima (“Beyond A Peak”), dedicated to enabling individuals with mental disabilities or limited means to partake in outdoor activities amidst the breathtaking landscapes of the Ecuadorian Andes.

Carla’s journey exemplifies the transformative power of mountains, not only as a personal pursuit but also as a catalyst for positive change and empowerment. As she traverses the globe, guiding and sharing her remarkable climbing career, Carla continues to inspire others to embrace their passions, overcome obstacles, and reach new heights of achievement.

Ecuatoriana

Ecuatoriana de 37 años, Máster en Geoquímica y guía certificada de Alta Montaña. Su primer contacto con la montaña y su primera cima fue a los 4 años de edad junto a su padre, en el Pasochoa a 4300 m. Como ella lo describe, fue amor a primera vista. Durante su adolescencia, escaló las montañas más altas del Ecuador: Cotopaxi, Cayambe, Chimborazo, y ha realizado más de 40 expediciones alrededor del mundo. En 2009, escaló la pared Sur del Aconcagua, una de las paredes más difíciles del mundo. Después se convirtió en la primera mujer latinoamericana y sexta en el mundo en ascender el Monte Everest, la montaña más alta del mundo sin oxígeno. No obstante, sus grandes logros, decide seguir adelante con retos únicos, convirtiéndose en la primera mujer del continente americano en ascender el K2 sin oxígeno, la segunda montaña más alta del mundo y considerada una de las más peligrosas y difíciles.

Tuvo la experiencia de subir el Everest y el K2 en un mismo año, convirtiéndola en la primera mujer del mundo en realizar tremenda hazaña. Es un modelo a seguir para todas las ecuatorianas, ya que ella es pionera en el montañismo femenino en el país, siendo la primera en subir una montaña de más de 8000 m de altura y pionera en realizar primeros ascensos nacionales e internacionales.

En el mundo del montañismo, el Piolet de Oro es comparable con el Óscar en el mundo de las películas. Carla fue nominada al Piolet de Oro en 2014. Es la primera mujer latinoamericana en guiar el monte Everest y en los Himalayas.

Su pasión por la montaña la llevó a ser mentora del proyecto “Más allá de una cima”, cuyos objetivos son promover las actividades al aire libre para personas con discapacidad intelectual y realizar videos y charlas motivacionales basadas en las experiencias vividas en la montaña.
